However, the itinerary seemed to be mostly determined by vacancies in the participating hotels, so that one day we drove 100 km and the next day 450, which left practically no time for stops. The roads in Iceland are narrow, winding and sometimes gravel, so that it always takes longer than you think to get to places. I was frustrated because there was so little time to explore the many attractions, but my husband really enjoyed just driving and looking around. I highly recommend adding extra days in Reykjavik, Lake Myvatn and perhaps Hofn, unless you enjoy spending 8 or more hours a day driving. Hotel rooms were very clean but small, but we expected that. Food was expensive but usually excellent.
