My wife and I visited Copenhagen and Helsinki the second week of November, 2007. We stayed at the Norlandia Richmond in Copenhangen and the Sokos Vaakuna in Helsinki. We liked the Vaakuna quite a bit, much more than the Norlandia Richmond. It's a very nice hotel, and is within walking distance of most things you'll want to see, as well as the train and bus stations.
If we were to do the trip again, we would go either a couple of weeks earlier or a couple of weeks later. The reason for going earlier is that there would be a little more daylight each day, and Tivoli is decorated for Halloween. A little later, and not only is Tivoli decorated for Christmas, but there's a Christmas market in the park in the Esplanade in Helsinki. During our stay, Tivoli was closed because it was between their Halloween and Christmas openings.
Also, for anyone worried about having to learn Finnish or Danish before taking this trip, don't be. Like other Scandinavian countries, English is widely and fluently spoken by most everyone you'll meet. Learning a couple of polite phrases is always helpful (please, thank you, etc.), but you won't have any problems communicating if you don't.
We enjoyed both cities quite a bit, and look forward to visiting each of them again in the future.
