Rome At Its Best Reviews

Overall I was very satisfied with go-today.com services. We booked an economy room and although the hotel was older it had recently been renovated. The rooms were very nice with fresh paint and new furntiture. Our original flight was cancelled and we were put on a different airline but go-today.com was very prompt with informing us and taking care of the switch. The only negative I have was the shuttle service from the airport to the hotel. It was not easy to find the shuttle service at the airport and we had to wait for sometime before leaving the airport. Than we spent over an hour in the shuttle while everyone was dropped at their various hotels. Going back from the hotel to the airport was much better and we got there in about 20 minutes. Thank you. We would definitely use go-today.com again.

This was the sixth trip we have taken with Go-Today and as always, it was a wonderful experience. All of our trips have taken place early to mid- December and I'd encourage everyone to look at traveling to Europe off-season. Depending on location, the weather can range from very cold to mild but the advantage is no long lines and crowds. Rome was apparently having an unusually rainy December and the Tiber River was very high and overflowed in some places while we were there. We had planned to take a boat ride on the river but that of course was impossible. Temperatures were in the 40s-50s range and a couple of days were sunny.

The Go-Today representative was able to find us a direct flight from Chicago to Rome which was great. Initially I thought it was on Delta but we were actually on Alitalia going and Delta coming home. The flight left on time and everything worked well with the shuttle we had arranged with Go-Today. We were supposed to change planes in Atlanta on the way home but the flight was so delayed that we would have missed the connecting flight. So, we were sent to JFK instead. Other than sitting for a long long time waiting our turn to take off, things were fine. We have had problems previously connecting through Paris as that is an impossible connection unless there is a least a two hour window and I'm reluctant to do it unless there are three hours in-between to allow for fog delays in winter especially.

We stayed at Hotel Serena which was a convenient location. The rooms are small - particularly the rooms with only one bed. You might consider asking for a two-bed room as the beds can be pushed together to make a king. Everything seemed newly remodeled and the rooms were very clean. The staff was also very helpful and friendly. The location was great as it is within two blocks of the Termini. We took the Metro on occasion although walked to most locations. We also took the fast (90 minute) train from the Termini to Florence for a day trip. One of the biggest advantages of the hotel location were the many restaurants right on the same block. It was nice to come back to the hotel in the evening, freshen up and then eat right in the neighborhood. There were also places to buy bottled water and soda - always a plus for me. The breakfast was fine - rolls, cheese, "cold cuts," yogurt, cereal, juices, coffee.

Florence is not mentioned in travel books as a day trip destination which is a shame. One day in Florence does not do it justice but our feeling was that one day was better than not going. I'd advise buying train tickets in advance however which we did not do. We planned on taking the 8 a.m. but there were only two seats left and since there were four of us ...... We were able to get seats on the 8:30 although were not all seated together. We walked from the station into the Duomo area just as a peaceful protest march was starting up. Signs at the Accademia said it was closed in support of the workers so we went to a nearby tourist information office to find out what was happening. We were told that there would be a discussion between the disagreeing sides at 1:30 p.m. and a decision would be made on whether or not to open the museums etc. We were also told that there was a national train strike from 2-6 p.m. that day! Since our return train was 7 p.m., it did not affect us. However, I'd suggest finding out ahead of time - if possible - if any transportation or other strikes are planned in cities you want to visit. The churches and wonderful outdoor markets were open during the work strike so we really did not feel we wasted our time. Friends advised us not to try and see everything in Florence but to walk the streets, eat and soak in the atmosphere. We had not planned on the Uffizi for example but did walk through the Accademia and saw the David statue. There were only a hand full of people there so again this was one of the upsides to going off -season.

We made arrangements ahead of time with a Rome based tour agency we found online to visit the Vatican. The only negative event happened as part of this. My son had a backpack with him and was told he had to check that. Tip - do not bring a large backpack with you to the Vatican. When we came out of St. Peter's, we had a long walk around the outside wall - in the rain - to get back to the visitor's center and retrieve the pack. My son came out rather shaken as the person behind the desk screamed at him in Italian. A woman also waiting in line screamed at him and twice hit him - hard- on the shoulder. He had no idea why people were yelling at him when all he was doing was picking up his backpack.

Rome was far more beautiful and friendly (except at the Vatican checking desk) than I had imagined. The ancient ruins that are everywhere are amazing. Go to Rome! And, if you are based in Rome, go to Florence for the day.

The hotel was great! Super close to the train station and relatively safe. Flying Alitalia, on the other hand, was a disaster. We were delayed and hour and a half on the way to Rome and 7 hours on the way back. The crew seemed pretty unapologetic about it and I was not surprised to learn that recently Alitalia had to call the police in to Fiumicino for riot control because they had canceled so many flights. So getting to and from Rome was hell, but the trip itself was great! Continental breakfast was ok. The rolls weren't the greatest and if I was paying 6 euro on top of the room rate for that I would be pissed, but since it was included in our package it was ok. Thanks Go-today and I'll book with you again as long as I'm not flying Alitalia!

Albergo Ottocento: clean, small-"boutique" style, modern but classy euro style w/ no nicks or bruises to note, staff always warm and cheerful, desk staff speak English, moderately full breakfast in their small restaurant. We had a 3:30am taxi for an early flight and the night staff made fresh latte and espresso while we waited. This small hotel is on a quiet street, 1.5 blocks from metro, < 1 km from the Spanish steps, 1.5-2 km to Trevi Fountain and Pantheon depending on your route. Use Metro to Colleseum and Forum and other sites.
Recommend: ROMA PAS which gets you 2 site entries and unlimited metro/bus. ROMA PIU pass get you that and more (e.g., we used it to bus to TIVOLI and entry to Villa de Este).
United Air: OK. Nonstop was great. Return w/ connecting flight added 5 hours and left me tired.
I've been to Rome several times and this is a terrific location for a hotel. Weather was unseasonally cold and rainy but (shsh! don't let this out) November crowds were nil and museum entry was a breeze.

We booked "Rome at Its Best" Tour from 10/6 - 10/13/2008 through go-today. Overall, a very positive experience and easy to do online. All questions were answered promptly via e-mail correspondence with go-today staff. Upon arrival in Rome, transfer to hotel and use of vouchers (downloaded ahead of time) went smoothly. Napoleon Hotel in Rome was the best!

The only "down" side to the vacation was the Vastours Company that was used by go-today to book our tours. The bus that picked us up at the hotel for all tours then drove to the Vastours main office where we had to transfer to another bus to begin the actual tour that was scheduled. There was MUCH confusion and disorganization in this process since all tourists from all of the local hotels were taken to this tiny office to be assigned to various buses based on their selected tours. Bus numbers were not clear and information regarding which bus to board was not clearly communicated. This occurred for all 4 days that we had tours scheduled, though the all-day tour to Florence proceeded more smoothly than the others. The Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica tour would have been more pleasant had our guide waited for the group to catch up or at least checked to ensure we were all together before moving through the vast crowds! There were several elderly people in the group who had difficulty keeping up with his pace, and were therefore unable to appreciate the sites since the focus was on trying to find the tour guide and avoid getting lost in the crowd. When this was brought to our guide's attention, his attitude was somewhat aloof and impatient with his customers.

We would definitely use "go-today" again for future vacations, but would not book tours or excursions through their tour-guide company; better to research and book the tours on our own.

We just returned yesterday from the trip to London, Paris, Venice, Florence and Rome. We loved every minute of the trip. It was organized very well and the hotels we stayed at were wonderful! A great way to get acquainted with Europe!

stayed at Hotel Gambrinus. I would not recommend this hotel solely on account of the location, which was a very nice area, but extremely remote from museums and ancient sites. we were extremely displeased with the breakfast at hotel gambrinus. coffee dispensed from a machine and allegedly fruit-flavored juice were utterly disgusting.

I was a bit nervous making last minute reservations for Rome within 1 week of traveling there, but everything worked out very smoothly. The Go-Today rep was able to get me on a flight with good times and connections and I was able to get into the hotel of my choice. My itinerary was booked and confirmed within 24 hours without issue.

Everything about the trip was obviously fantastic. We had problems in the US and Europe with our E-tickets not being compatible at the check in counters, resulting in much anxiety.

Excellent! Paperwork was all in order and arrived early. Pick-up and return to airport was on time. No hitches or problems. We added on a few nights and that didn't change plans or cause any errors.

Services and price from Go-today were very good. Lufthansa direct flight from Portland, OR to Frankfurt, Germany with quick connect to Rome was so easy. Having to make the additional stop, Rome-Copenhagen-Seattle-Portland, coming home made for a very long day although the flights were comfortable and did allow us travel on our requested dates.
Review Provided by: Rosemary McGreer who traveled on 10/30/2006
We had a great time - the flights were as advertised no problems with the airlines at all. The hotel on the other hand... we stayed at the Zone. I should have read the fine print closer... the shuttle was almost worthless. As long as you don't mind walking a good distance to catch a bus this place would be fine. The one advantage staying here is that it was very quiet at night. I do wish I had chosen one closer to town, but the shuttle gave me a false sense of mobility. The internet connection they offer is very slow and a waste of your "per minute charges". The rooms were clean and made up nicely every day. The coffee was wonderful, the staff friendly, etc. but I noticed mold in a hallway and paint peeling on our room ceiling and notified them that I did hear water dripping. Go-Today did a great job overall and I will travel with them again and I will recommend you to my friends, just not to this hotel.... I should have done a better job of checking before I booked this one.

This is the third group trip that I have arranged via Go-today. London-Munich and now Rome. If you go off season the deals are wonderful! The staff are professional, experienced, and very helpful. They will arrange a package that meets your budget. I have recommended Go-today to several of my friends for their travel needs. This is the only company that I will use for all of my future adventures.

Our trip to Rome was great for the price we paid. We did run into problems connecting in Paris. We flew AirFrance from Detroit to connect in Paris which we only had an hour to catch our next flight to Rome. DeGaulle airport is under a major remodel so we got off the plane on a runway & had to take a bus to the terminal to catch our next plane to Rome. Needless to say we missed it but were able to get another flight within a little more than an hour. On the way home it got worse since the air traffic controllers were on strike in Paris. We again had an hour to connect but our plane out of Rome was delayed & we ended up again missing our home flight to Detroit. We were rerouted to Toronto with an hour & a half wait which wasn't so bad til we sat on the runway waiting to take off another hour & a half. We had to run through the airport in Toronto to catch our flight to Detroit while pulling aour luggage. Somehow our luggae made it home to our surprize & to AirFrance's credit. There is no way gotoday can predict strikes but an hour is not enough time in the Paris airport until the construction is completed. My daughter & her friend had a direct flight from Atlanta to Rome with no problems using gotoday on the same trip. To Airfrance's credit I will say they got us on new flights very quickly but we were about 6 hours late getting home.
Once in Rome our trip was wonderful. Our Hotel Serena was one of less expensive but clean & near Termini station very convient. We got week metro passes & used subways & buses which were very easy to navigate all over Rome. We saw as many museums & churches as possible in 6 days. We did go to Florence on our own which involved getting a train ticket at Termini & doing a little online research. A big time saver is getting reservations at some of the museums that take them so you save lots of time standing in line. call the day before for Borghese, Acadamia & Uffizzi in Florence. Go to the Vatican museum on Monday not Saturday 20 minutes versus 2 hours to wait. Traveling the end of March is good temperatures in the 60s & not as crowded. We will book again with gotoday & travel off season. Be prepared to spend more than you think on food but it is delicious. Breakfast is included at the hotel which helps. The churches are free admissions the museums reasonable & most have audioguides Euro$ 4 which is well worth it. The language barrier was not a problem anyplace. All the major attractions have English speakers as well as retaurants shops & the hotel staff was great.

We stayed at the Imperiale Hotel on Via Veneto. Its located right on the subway system, which is a plus in getting around Rome. The hotel is excellent.

This was our third trip with go-today and just like the others, it was terrific. We stayed at Hotel King which was in walking distance of most of the attractions and just down the street from the Spanish Steps in one direction and the subway in another. We had problems with boat tours on the Tiber due to excessive rain before we arrived. The refunds on these trips was handled promptly. Everything was perfect. I cannot wait to take our next trip.

As usual go-today.com was GREAT! This was my second time planning a trip and I will continue to go with go-today.com whenever I plann a trip. However, the Hotel Diplomatic did not live up to the standards they advertised. More like a 2 star hotel as they had no restuarant and depending on whom you talked to they provided different information about buses - price of van to airport for two people. Hotel was clean and in a good location. Having booked tours in advance allows you to plan your vacation way in advance, and save money as well as time.

Having used go-today.com on many other trips, I knew to expect everything to be exactly as described. We chose the Hotel Veneto, which was excellent (though the room was small), the restaurants were great, the natives very friendly and accommodating and the bus/subway system very easy to negotiate. All in all, it was an excellent trip, typical quality for go-today.com.

My friend and I wanted to have a girls trip. Both of us love to travel and we are more of the adventurous type. We wanted a hotel/air package, but wanted to be able to tour on our own. We were very pleased with the service provided by go-today.com. The hotel was right next to the Termini which provided us with easy access to bus and trains. We were on a super-economy budget, so we went for the third lowest hotel, San Remo. It was fine for what we paid, but I think it could have been a little bit better as we had a couple problems with a broken toilet and then after being moved to another room with an unpleasant smell. Considering the prices we paid this was absolutely fine. We had a great time in Rome and because we were so close to the termini station, we were even able to take a day trip to Florence!

It was an awesome trip! go-today.com! had all the travel connections organized very smoothly, we just had to be there! Rome was wonderful! I loved the little hotel. Sure, the room was small, but that's the European style. Our hotel had more than a continental breakfast--it was very ample with something for everyone including cereal, eggs, coldcuts, fruit, and all kinds of rolls, croissants, etc. If you like a soft pillow, take your own, but that was my only discomfort.

The city was wonderful. We did much of our touring on our own. We did sign up for one of the tours advertised on go-today.com! We chose the Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento all day tour. I really wanted to see Pompeii and have a more scholarly tour, which this wasn't; we only spent 2 hours there. Sorrento was very interesting to see as was Amalfi Drive and the Coast. However, the touristy stops that the tour company did at the Cameo carving factory and the inlay furniture factory were clearly all about selling wares to tourists. For the $135 that the tour cost, they could have done without this.

go-today.com! was very prompt and organized with all the paperwork. The fares are reasonable and we flew on majoy airlines. My husband and I can hardly wait to choose our next trip!

Great trip!
First trip for wife to Europe. Took our two kids (12 & 14) and we just wanted to take in a bit of Europe but do it on the cheap. Stayed at King Hotel. Hotel was small but clean and recently renovated. Location was excellant--short walk to TOP of the Spanish steps and loads of shops, dining and next door to the Sistina Theatre.
Walkable distance (15 min) to Trevi Fountain and long walk (1 hr but enjoyable with lots of places to stop) to Vatican.
Have used go-today.com four time before and know of about 8 other trips that others have booked too--always great experience.

Great trip and oh so affordable. The $15 transfer from airport to hotel saved us a lot of stress because Rome is not an easy city to navigate. We stayed at the Seiler (Quiet location, very helpful staff, but very, very basic!!!) However we did not pay for luxary. Shower was right on floor of bath as it is in many boats. Our side trip to Pompeii was worth it as was the Sacred Rome tour(it was 2 of us with a guide) This is our 2nd go-today.com trip, and we will use them again

I will be booking my next vacation with go-today.com. The tickets and the hotel voucher worked out perfectly, and the staff was always available to answer questions. Our stay in Rome was very nice, we were close to a metro station and in walking distance of many sights. We chose the cheapest hotel and for the most part the accomodations were nice. The (Hotel Galeno)hotel room and facilities were very clean. Although some of the hotel staff were not very cooperative (we requested additional blankets because the room was a bit cold). Futhermore, the hotel attendant was very late with our wake up call on the return trip. Overall a very pleasant trip and if you are traveling on a budget you can be safe to go with the least expensive hotel. We will definitely be booking our next trip but will upgrade to more expensive hotel. I will be singing go-today.com praises to all my friends and coworkers.

Thank-you for another great trip. We stayed at the Hotel Nazionale in Rome. A beautiful hotel near the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain. This was our 5th. trip using your company. Everything as promised and in order. We would stay at the Nazionale next time in Rome. Also a great restaurant attached to the hotel called Al Vicario, fabulous food and friendly.

Excellent value. Ambra Palace was a great hotel with a Metro station just around the corner. Although the hotel location was not central, the Metro made it very easy to get to all the attractions within minutes. I would definitely go again. Note for single travelers. The single rooms are a bit small. Our room was triple occupancy and it was great but our friend had a single room which was horribly small.

Had a great time. Stayed at Hotel Pavia. It was nice. However, the hotel staff sucked. They would not give us a voltage thing. We had to talk with the manager to get one. In all it was a great trip. I will be back. I just want stay at the Hotel Pavia.
Because, staff was not helpful and rude.

Do take advantage of the great breakfast the hotels offer. Its good!! And will save you about $14.00. We had the same breakfast at a restraunt for $14.00.
Dont take #8 tour by night. Its horrible. Save some money and take a taxi w/ a bottle of your favorite wine to all the sites. The bus tour was horrible could not hear a thing the guide said.
Also, get insurance on your bags when travelling to Roma!!

Everything was great. We stayed at the Napoleon Hotel. The rooms were charming and the service was outstanding. My wife and I traveled to Rome from Detroit for a week in the Winter through go-today.com and were very happy with the trip. The flight was on a new USAirways Airbus (via Philadelphia) and could not have been better (without paying for First Class). Friends of ours, also traveling with go-today.com, met us in Rome. They had traveled from New York on Swiss Air and were also happy with their flights.
We were met at the airport by a driver who drove us right to our hotel in Rome in a nice Mercedes. The return trip (city to airport) was also flawless.
For a hotel, we chose the Hotel Regency which turned out to be very nicely located in relation to all of the things that we wanted to see and the fine restaurants and shops on the Via Veneto. The hotel itself was very clean, safe, and private, but nothing very special (no gym, hot tub, grand foyer, etc.) It would probably get 2-1/2 or 3 stars in a AAA guide book. All-in-all, we had a great time and will definitely travel with go-today.com again. Feel free to wrote to me with any questions you may have.

Go-today.com made all the complicated arrangements, leaving us time to research the sites and work on our itinerary. Hotel Impero had an excellent location, a very helpful staff, and a great breakfast buffet. However, the beds were in need of new mattresses and the hot water was unpredictable. It's a good thing we were too exhausted from such full days to complain. USAir had big air busses that were comfortable enough(for planes.) Their entertainment systems were nice, but they could not be captioned, a source of great frustration for our deaf teen-aged son. All in all, go-today.com exceeded our expectations and we will definitely use them again. London, anyone?!

This was a wonderful vacation. The Hotel Napoleon is a great place to stay. Just a five minute walk from the Colosseum; a subway stop literally five feet from the door; quite, clean rooms; very friendly staff; and a great breakfast buffet. We spent five days in Rome and took a one day excursion to Pompei. Our flights were on US Air on their new planes with personal entertainment systems for each seat (you get a choice of 10 movies, multiple tv shows or music - which you can pause, fast forward, or rewind).

All in all this was a great vacation. This is the second time I have travelled with go-today.com and plan to continue doing so.

Feel free to write me at rome@johnpmartin.com if you have any specific questions.

A tremendous value. I was able to give my mom a vacation in Rome. Great flight on Air France. The Hotel Genova was centrally located two blocks from the subway and an easy walk to the Colesium. Our drivers to and from the airport were prompt and courteous.
