Travel To Egypt
More information on our destinations in Egypt
Travel to Egypt Predictably Egypt evokes images of ancient pyramids and the ghosts of famous rulers like Tutankhamen and Cleopatra. Travelers considering an Egypt vacation are sometimes surprised to learn that Egypt is this and so much more. Where else can you sail the Nile and witness thousands of years of history, travel to an oasis, take a camel trek across the dunes, spend a night under the desert stars like a Bedouin, explore a bazaar, soak in the sun on a Mediterranean beach and enjoy some of the best scuba diving in the world.

If you are not sure how to get started planning your own Egyptian vacation, here are some recommendations for things to do and see when traveling in Egypt:

Cruise the Nile
Perhaps there is no better way to get an intimate look into Egypt's history, landscapes, landmarks and culture than on a Nile River cruise. The Nile passes through Egypt for nearly 1,000 miles and with more than 70 pyramids along the river, this is a leisurely, comfortable and romantic way to explore the great monuments and soak up the atmosphere of ancient cities on stopovers along the way.

Begin in the capital city of Cairo located in the north of Egypt; it is both ancient and amazingly modern.

  • With more than 136,000 Egyptian antiquities on display, touring the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is a must.
  • Wander the corridors of Khan el-Khalili bazaar, built in the 14th century, and haggle for exquisite jewelry, hand-woven carpets and paintings.
  • The Pyramids of Giza are the only remaining monuments of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the icon most associated with Egypt.
  • The Great Sphinx of Giza statue stands as the half-human, half-lion guardian of the Giza Plateau.
  • The Saladin Citadel and the Mosque of Mohamed Ali (the Alabaster Mosque) are some of Cairo's most famous landmarks and tourist attractions.
  • If time allows include a tour of the Al-Azhar Mosque, Ibn Tulun Mosque, the Coptic Hanging Church, Al Rifai Mosque and Sultan Hassan Mosque while in Cairo.
Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and sits on the Mediterranean coast in north-central Egypt. Founded in 334 BC, Alexandria was named for its founder, Alexander the Great. Little of the ancient city remains and today it is quite modern. A number of famous mosques, museums and antiquities that should be seen are:
  • The Roman Amphitheatre, Pompey's Pillar, the Catacombs and the impressive Citadel of Qaitbay.
Luxor is a city in Upper Egypt (southern) with some of the most important archeological findings in the world.
  • Located on the west bank of the Nile, the Valley of the Kings is a World Heritage site that contains 21 tombs of Pharaohs. This site is most famous because of the discovery of the Tutankhamun tomb.
  • In their own quest for immortality, the necropolis of the Valley of the Queens houses more than 70 tombs of wives of Pharaohs and their children, including the tomb of Queen Nefertari.
  • The Tombs of the Nobles is an area on the West Bank which houses the burial tombs of nobles, priests and officials.
  • The magnificent Luxor Temple is a large, ancient complex on the east bank of the Nile. Begun by King Amenhotep III, the construction was completed by Tutankhamun.
  • The vast Karnak Temple Complex covers approximately 200 acres and took 1,600 years to complete.
  • Deir el-Madinah is an ancient Egyptian village which was home to the workers and artisans who built the temples and tombs.
  • A tour of Medinet Habu Temple, the Ramesseum Temple, Malkata Palace of Amenophis III, Colossi of Memnon, Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum are also highly recommended.
Edfu is an ancient city located on the west bank of the Nile River, north of Aswan.
  • The Temple of Horus is the most completely preserved temple in Egypt and the second largest.
Aswan is Egypt's most southerly town. A highlight is watching the white-sailed feluccas navigate the Nile to the surrounding islands.
  • The Temple of Isis of Philae was dismantled and reassembled to the nearby island of Agilka when the construction of the Aswan Dam threatened to place it under water.
  • Aswan Dam consists of the Aswan High Dam and the older Aswan Low Dam designed to control Nile River flooding and for power generation.
  • Elephantine Island is located on Egypt's southern border and one of the most ancient sites in Egypt.
Sharm el-Sheikh, at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, is a city emerging as a major tourist destination. With its white sandy beaches and the crystal blue waters of the Red Sea, it's a natural for watersports, and is particularly valued for scuba diving and snorkeling. Here you can also find horse and camel safaris into the desert, golf courses, casinos and discos.

Hurghada is a tourist resort on the Red Sea that has developed an international reputation for snorkeling and diving because of its variety of offshore coral reefs and rare marine life. Beach lovers will also find aquatic sports such as windsurfing, parasailing and canoeing.
