The Hotel Grand Cavour was a wonderful place to stay. It was within 5 blocks of 90% of the highlights of Florence. We could not have picked a more central location to see the highlights of Florence. Please encourage guests to choose this location to stay. A highlight of our trip was the Cinque Terra vist to 5 Villages. WE went on a Best of Tuscany Tour and enjoyed Siena, Chianti, San Gemingno, and Pisa.

Thanks to you for a perfectly orchestrated trip. All went as promised-down to our unusual request for a shared car with another couple.
Villa Piazzano , just ourside of Cortona, is a jewel. It is new, but perfectly run by a most interesting family who are happy to share a drink and stories as you sit under the trees and view the incredibly beautiful surroundings. Rooms lovely and modern, breakfast just right and dinner (just OK)if you request in the morning. This place gets an easy five star rating.
On the other hand, the Montebello Splendid in Florence is a dump. It is to be closed and renovated soon and the staff is uncaring and nasty. Rooms tight, non-functioning air-conditioning (in 95 degree heat). Breakfast was fine and we did have a pleasant dinner there one evening when it was storming too hard to leave the hotel. Perhaps it is notable that our foursome were the only guests eating in the hotel that evening.
Overall, however, a wonderful vacation and we'll be looking for other options with you in the future.
I have my eye on Bali!

The Hotel San Michele in Cortona was wonderful. The rooms were simple, but the service was friendly, and the location couldn't have been better. If you have a car, be warned it's a steep walk into town from the parking lot.
Exporing Cortona and the Tuscan/Umbrian countryside was definitely WAY more fun than crowded, grimy, expensive Florence (but, to each his own). Driving is a breeze. Just pick a direction and have fun!
Trattoria Dardano was a delightful little place to eat in Cortona. The owner treated us like family, and presented us with a bottle of his special homemade juniper liqueur. We had encounters like that all through the countryside - VERY friendly Italians!
By contrast, Florentines seemed very cool, and the tourists were grumpy while they stood in long lines. Have your concierge make reservations for the Uffizi and Academy and avoid those lines! We talked to people who stood in line for hours, while we walked right in at our scheduled times.
Plaza Lucchesi was a nice hotel, located close to Santa Croce. Easy to walk all over Florence from the hotel. Recommend Osteria Vasari on via dei Bardi for lunch. Incredible food in a tiny little hole in the wall.

It seems clear that go-today.com has actually checked out the accommodations they offer, and in general everything went like clockwork. We spent three nights at the Hotel “Paris” in Florence. It’s a 3-star hotel and the room wasn’t great, but it was clean, adequately comfortable, and the bathrooms had clearly been remodeled very recently (new fixtures, etc.). Located 2 blocks from the Duomo, it had an extensive breakfast buffet in a beautiful hall with frescoed vaulted ceilings and made-to-order expresso/cappuccino included. We then spent 5 nights at a place called Villa La Palagina (http://www.palagina.it), ~ 20 miles south of Florence about 1/3 of the way up the road from Figline Valdarno (which is just off the A11 superstrada at the Incisa exit) to Greve-in-Chianti. It is a totally renovated (only open since 10/02, we think) 16th Century villa set on a hillside in beautiful surroundings. It aspires to be elegant, and suffers only from the lack of a good hotel consultant to fix small details such as irrational placement of furniture, lack of mirror outside bathroom, lack of soap dish in shower, etc.
A great vacation!
